Volunteers Needed to Assist in Registering Donors at a Bone Marrow Drive on Behalf of a 6 year old Girl with Leukemia

Sunday, March 29, at Harlem Children’s Zone, 35 East 125th Street

A donor must be found soon for Jasmina (see more at www.oneforjasmina.org), a kindergartener at PS 41 on West 11th Street in Manhattan. A large donor drive will be held on Sunday March 29 at Harlem Children’s Zone at 35 East 125th Street. There will be substantial publicity, and a huge number of respondents are hoped for. Numerous volunteers will be needed to sit at registration tables and get registration forms filled out correctly, or assist donors with the “cheek swab” which collects relevant information for the laboratory to look for a match.

The drives are critical because Jasmina is African-American, and African-Americans are under-represented in the donor data base. It is much more likely to find Jasmina a match from an African American donor. Time is of the essence; Jasmina may only have something like 6 weeks left before she must have a donor, and it takes several weeks from the time of a drive to get someone identified, and then more testing and preparation is needed before a successful transfer. You will see on the website that in fact there are several drives scheduled before March 29, but other groups are organizing volunteers for those.

Volunteers are needed who can work from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, or from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
